I like this option:
But I'd change it so that player doesn't retire, but is lured away by an agent to become a star player. The team that he was playing for (and any other teams in the league using the same race) can hire him at the start of any game as with any other star player, with a cost equal to his final value.
Instead of it being a 5+, it could be an either/or: on a 1, the player retires and the team gets cash for his testimonial, on a 6 he becomes a star player but the team gets no cash.
